Hi all,

About 10 NorCal VOA members converged on Thunderhill to run the classic 3-mile layout with Cyclone (Eagle's Nest) for the weekend. Several generations were represented, and nearly everyone brought a wing to keep our snakes planted on the high speed sweepers that this track is famous for...

Weather was absolutely beautiful, narrowly dodging the torrential rain of a day prior. We let my friend Mike join us in his GT3, and he entertained us with goofy songs in between sessions...

Nearly everyone set their personal best this weekend. Mike and Loyde were two of the faster drivers of the day, with Loyde narrowly edging the German machine for the win...

I was excited about returning to this layout. This is a track that I'm very familiar with, as I raced in the SCCA last year here in a Mustang. I had also spent a fair amount of time playing here in my GTS. After warming up on the first day and feeling out the ACR, I was ready to push hard on Sunday. What I wasn't prepared for was how incredibly fast and capable this car would be. Second session of the day is usually the fastest. The track was clean, and weather was still cool enough for maximum grip and plenty of HP. Here's a vid of my fastest lap in that session...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBO6YfKChSw

I never dreamed of being able to run a lap this quickly here, but as you can see from the video, the ACR makes it easy. Smooth, drama-free and lightning fast. I can't find the production car lap record here, but I would imagine that I've got to be close. My lap tied the PC class SCCA Porsche Cup record of 1:53.1. UPDATE: Chris pointed out that there are faster Porsche Cup cars, so this class may not be the fastest Cup racing class. Still, a 100% stock Viper on factory Kumhos able to compete with fully-prepped Porsche race car aint half bad. If anyone is on the fence on which track car to buy, the success we Viper owners are having at our local track days ought to push them off it and solidly into the seat of an ACR. Here's the SCCA record with the Porsche Cup class at the top, followed by my lap timer.

Cannot wait to return to Thunderhill in June :United_States:

Amazing how much speed it carries through the corners - that's the real difference between the ACR and all others. While a 650S or 488 has a much higher top end on the straights at Thunderhill, and can bleed speed amazingly well (particularly the McLaren),they can't carry nearly the speed through the bends. It's genuinely amazing how fast you are through the front half of the track.

Another exciting and informative post, Todd. Thank you for a great read! Thunderhill is supposed to be amazing and it sure looks it. I did a double take on Viper #13 as it's identical to my car. Except for the number.

I tracked my red GTS with a McLaren at Sonoma last year and was blown away at how quick the 650S was exiting the corners. Maybe it was you? I don't remember the color but the guy had some sort of track protectant goo painted on the car. My friend Mike with the GT3 had a 458 that was wicked fast and handled remarkably well. I cannot wait for you to track your ACR and give us your comparison to those fine machines.

That's Rick Bawden's gorgeous TA 2.0. His girlfriend attended an SCCA driving school in it Saturday, then Rick joined us on the main track Sunday. A couple that tracks together stays together, LOL

Todd,

Wish I could've been there, but had an unexpected event take up my Saturday once again.

Awesome driving! I bet at 153.1 that IS the production car lap record as it stands, but I also bet you can get her into the high 140s next time! I'm starting to wonder if these cars can handle an almost no lift into turn 8 with all of the aero. I sure don't have the balls for it but i'm sure someone will try. Lol

Here is a 2011 GT3 Cup that ran a 148.7 with 390whp. In the low 50's territory you won't find anything stock to compare to....nothing but Cup cars, which is a compliment in itself. ;) These cars are truly unbelievable. You've set the bar for all of us Viper folk to work towards at T-Hill now. :car-smiley-003:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfp3mgx6xTI

Also, bone stock my buddy ran his 2011 Z06/Z07 with Sport Cups to a 1.55. That is one of the fastest laps I've seen in a bone stock car, considering 505hp and true street tires.

Hi Chris,

Yes I saw your name on the entry list, too bad you weren't able to make it.

I agree that I think turn 8 and maybe turn 1 could be taken faster, working on my courage too, lol.

That 2011 GT3 Cup is piloted by Mike Hedlund, the same guy that's shown as the SCCA record holder in an older 2009 Cup. Maybe there are different classes and the PC class has different rules? I'm unfamiliar with the SCCA rules for Porsche classes. I knew it was too good to be true, haha. Plus it won't be long before Darius challenges my lap time. Until then I will enjoy my five minutes in the sun.

That's flying for a relatively stock C6 Z06 as well. Looks like he had Sport Cup 2s and bushings, but otherwise stock. One of my favorite cars, I like it more than the C7 Z06 for sure.

June 4-5 Thunderhill 5-mile, put it on your calendar!

Nice pic's and nice time. Keeping good company with a dedicated race Porsche is nothing to sneeze at regardless of what tier cup car it is. More seat time and I could see you hitting 1:50 or lower. Nice to see cup car fast times owners are getting from the ACR. Its the real deal. I wonder if Randy or the like could get a stock ACR closer to the 1:45 that Vette ran on this track?

Looks like a great event. Thanks for continuing to post track videos of your new ACR, I really enjoy them!

It looks like there were multiple ACRs in attendance including a gen IV. Any idea how all the lap times compared understanding there are different drivers of course?

I think it would be awesome to someday have the same driver run a few laps in each iteration of the ACR at a given track just to see progress in performance.

Thanks Snakebit, I would love to see Randy or Chris Winkler take a stab at this track. I'm surprised they didn't go for the record here, it is more known than Buttonwillow or Willow Springs with 25 Hours of Thunderhill and other major races.

When I raced in the SCCA, there were a few wide-body tube chassis Corvette race cars that were the class of the field- in their own zip code. Very light and gobs of HP. When I googled that Corvette owner, this is what I got. I don't see the stock full-weight ACR competing with them, more likely a Viper GT3-R.

Glad you enjoyed the video. Admir in the stock red/white Gen V ACR ran a 1:58 and Loyde ran a 2:00 in the grey Gen IV ACR. Loyde's ACR has a modded engine, Penske coilovers and slicks. My friend Mike in his stock Porsche GT3 hit a 1:59, I think we were the top four times of the day.

My Gen IV ACR is stock and on Corsas. And I need more work at Thunderhill; I seriously want to go back today and fix a few key points! That said, I ran a couple of 2:05x laps in traffic. While our Shelby club hosts were good trackmates, Rick (TA 2.0) and I ran in a group that was over-populated... even though we'd grid at the front, they were still sending cars out when we came back around. Some jaw-dropping classic Mustangs, though, so it was like running through a blue-oval car show during each session :D

Todd's ACR Extreme is the rock star at the party. It's jaw-dropping in appearance and runs clean and hard, credit to Todd. And it's clearly confidence-inspiring, which may prove to be its best characteristic...

Chris, we missed you (and our other usual suspects, too). But it was a blissful weekend at Thunderhill... for once, it wasn't frickin' 105 degrees at 10:30 AM, hot as :icon_devil:

Todd, congrats getting into the 53's is hauling the mail for sure! It's been a while since I've run the 3 mile, after turning so many laps there it unfortunately kind of lost it's luster as far as being fun for track days so I most of '14 I spent instructing with HOD and last year me and the wife had a little guy so getting away was few and far between and I reseved those days for the 5 mile which I just think is one of the absolute best track around. It looks like the last time I was trying to go fast on the 3 mile the best that I could muster without pushing it too much was a 55.4 on some crap scrub Conti slicks, so you got me covered:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2vb2FKISAg

The second video that Rapidrezults posted was of Robert and he's pretty fast in basically a stock C6Z & Rich some how managed to get into the 52's at the Optima in his modified C6Z on Rivals back in February. I think that these are about the fastest times you are going to find out of the C6Z vette guys on the 3 mile.

As far as P Cup cars is concerned not a lot of them run out thre regularly but my buddy Mike who now track a C6Z sold his early 2000 model to a buddy and here is Lars running it. I think that the best he's done is about a 52 over the top.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_9n_TsJxI8

I would expect newer ones with a good driver to be 2-3 seconds a lap faster.

What really impresses me though is this video of Bill running his C5 track car in GT2 configuration with aero and all of somthing like 380 HP lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zY-XFfBWE9s

Every time I see video's from him it just reminds me that no matter how fast I feel I may be going i'm allways still leaving a ton of time on the table!

I think that one thing that we all need to remember though is that when we are discussing times in the mid to low 50's at T-hill that we are talking about lap times that very few people are ever going to see in their life. It at times (especially when watching video) may not seem fast, but it truly is and it's also in the realm of where if something does go wrong there are more than likely going to be some very serious repercussions. The fact that any of our cars are capable of these type of times is amazing, the fact that the new ACR can do it out of the box, stock is imho mind blowing! It may sound strange to say this but there are always going to be faster drivers or faster conditions, so imho after a certain point (which I think that you hit once you are in the mid to low 50's here) it frankly starts to become pointless or I should probably say "dangerous" to start chasing lower lap times. It's simply the point of diminishing returns where the likelihood of something going wrong increases exponentially for every tenth of a second that you start trying to knock off. From looking at your video I honestly think that you can probably drop another second or two off your time if you wanted to really push it. However we have to remember though that at the end of the day these are street cars, they do not have cages and fire suppression systems, we are doing this to have fun and when all is said and done I think that we all want to bring our cars home whole and see our family again. It's has become pretty clear to me that stock to stock there is no other reasonably priced car that can compete with the track day capabilities of an ACR period.

Rich, myself, Mike and some of the other faster vette guys are planning on being out for the 5 mile HOD event in June and I look forward to seeing you out there and running with some of you guys. To me there is no rivalry between the brands, at the end of the day we are all American made underdogs lol. For the most part it's the P-car guys that seem to look down their nose at both of our brands with their GT3's and now $200k+ RS's that seem to be in denial that we can possibly be faster than them lol!

Yes that was the most crowded track weekend I've ever experienced, short of a NASA time trial where we had something like 80 cars on track, all WOT. It was a hornet's nest, haha. The Shelby Club is going to add another run group back in to thin the field.

Thanks Mike. Let me know how many cars are in the run groups, and how you like running with them. Last time I did NASA it was so crowded at Thunderhill that we were two wide all the way to turn 5. It was nutty. They mixed the time trial guys with the advanced HPDE guys and everyone was trying to get their fast lap in for a good grid position.

I hear you on loving the T-hill 5-mile! What a kick with such a mix of tight technical corners on the west side and the high speed stuff on the east. The 3-mile track is still fresh enough for me that I'm entertained, especially now learning it all over again with big aero.

Agreed, it is surprising how smooth the driving looks when someone lays down a quick lap. Your session looks like a Sunday drive to church, lol. Whenever I step over the limits where lots of corrections are needed, I really feel like I'm hauling ass. That is, until I see with the lap timer that shows I'm actually turning slower laps. Bill Brinkop's lap looks like he's just warming up as he cruises to a 1:48. Wow. I almost raced with Bill in NASA ST2 class in a previous car. I had a Camaro that was pretty fast for it's portly weight, but I came to my senses that it was not in the same league as Bill and company.

Excellent perspective about the dangers of running at the speeds that these cars are capable of, I appreciate the reality check. I have a roll bar, a 6-point harness and a Necksgen to keep my head in its proper place should something go wrong. But you are right, not near the protection of a true cage.

Awesome that you guys will be at Thunderhill early June. And to your point on no rivalry, this is my new favorite t-shirt...:United_States:

Fantastic post Todd! you look super smooth.

Incredible driving! SO smooth, and amazing how early the ACR lets you get back into the throttle!

You guys on the left coast look like you have a blast! People would go nuts over here seeing that many vipers on the track at once.

Thanks gents! Yep, NorCal Viper tracking is making a resurgence. Glad to be a part of it.

Why wasn't I invited????? lol
And whose Red/White ACR???

You know you've got an open invitation any time you want to drive up this way brotha. Viper Tracks 3 at Sonoma would hopefully sweeten the pot, that's the goal. I've got to start that dialogue with Lance and Scott to see if we can make it happen.

That bad ass red and white ACR is owned by Admir. I ordered that exact color scheme in part as a tribute to the Tudor champs, but changed to Stryker Orange at the last minute. It is one of the most gorgeous ACRs I've ever laid eyes on, and Admir has the skills to back up its racy good looks.

That first 3/4 reat shot looks epic. Doesn't look like you can fit a piece of paper between the car and the track lol...Sucked down. Love the red/white Oreca theme too on that other ACR. Great pics.

Good to meet you too, Admir. And after seeing your bad ass car in the flesh, I am seriously thinking about putting white stripes on my ACR. My stripes are vinyl, relatively cheap and easy to replace.

When I was a kid, there was an orange '69 Z/28 with white stripes in the neighborhood that to this day is one of my all time favorite muscle cars. I'm thinking, why not?

Jelly...

I test drove a Hugger Orange '69 Z/28 back in the day. Passed on it because it cost too much...at $5K! Idiot! But I was 17 and would have ruined it, anyway. :drive:
