Had this issue at Le mans last year, fitted a replacement relay and thought the issue was solved, well it seems its happened again! :(

Took the car out yesterday for the first time since October.

Checked the temperature gauge and noticed it was running Hot!
Speed seemed to make no difference.

Coolant is due for a change but I have been so busy with work I have not had time to do much on the car.
No leaks, coolant full (Green Coolant), 50/50 mix. Got the car home and today went back out to the garage to see whats going on. Car has now done 75,450 miles.

Started the car up and let it sit there on idle. Temp went up to 3/4 on the gauge, it started moving toward the red then the High Speed fan kicked in and moved it back to 3/4. The low speed fan is not working! Tried swapping relays but it did not seem to work.
Switched engine off then looked at the red plastic slots that the relay plugs into, looks like one of the slots is showing signs of melting.
I fabricated up a link fuse and crimped two spade connectors to the wires and plugged it into the relay slots. The low fan then started to work, but the only problem with doing this is the fan stays on the whole time (weather the engine is off or on), so to stop the fan working you have to disconnect one of the spade terminals.

If this has ever happened to you it might be helpful to show how to bypass the relay to keep you running :)

Anyone know how to get to the wires under that red plastic cover?

Mark, if you have not yet done so, you might explore the wiring on the back side of this relay block.

Hi Steve, I'm hoping someone will explain how to get to the wires, looks like a PIA!

Nice dash...where did you get it?

Nice dash...where did you get it?

Dash AND Window cowl are carbon dipped,(basicly its a water transfer), there are many patterns of carbon so the company will help you choose the pattern of your choice and send you a sample, you then have a choice of finish, satin lacquer or gloss. I had the outside window cowl finished in gloss and the inside dash finished in satin. You remove your existing dash and the dash is lightly sanded (if its a later textured dash) to make it smooth then the water transfer is laid into a large water tank and the dash is passed through the water tank where the transfer then sticks to the dash. I also had the door handle surrounds done too so the dash flows.
https://www.wickedcoatings.co.uk/sample-speed-shapes-carbon-fibre. It was a big step for me to do this mod but it has transformed the car making it really stand out and I could not be happier :)

Fan connector plug @ fan. You're welcome. Thanks Dave, but what exactly do you mean? I think I have melted female spade terminals under the red plastic relay board, I am not sure that the fan connector plug near the fan itself is the issue or have I missed something?

Where the fan wire plugs in to the car's wiring harness at the fan.

Best way to solve this relay thing is to eliminate the electomechanical relays and their slide on friction fit terminals. Even moving them outside the PDC is a bandaid approach. Use the factory fan relay outputs to trigger the fan load using solid state relays. I did that 3 years ago and it has worked flawlessly.

Man that's AWESOME, especially on the windshield cowl! Anybody know if there's similar company here in the US?

What he described sounds like hydro dipping.

Once you resolve the fan issue, you may need to have another close look at your thermostat. And then proceed with a cooland flush and burp.

Found this for you :)

Reason I went with satin inside the car was I did not want too much reflection off the windscreen, but both look great :)

Dave, could you point me in the right direction on what relays I need? I googled solid slate relays and there are many types? I am not great with Electrical wiring stuff and don't want to Fu** up the car. I have the service manual and wiring diagrams but if you have a link to the correct product that would be great :)

Cheers Mark

Thanks for the info Mark, I'm going to start another thread about this. If you wouldn't mind posting some interior pics when you get a chance?

The SSR's that I did are not plug and play into the OEM location. That defeats the purpose and doesn't really gain you anything.

What I did was...

* Removed the entire fan load from the PDC
* Eliminated using electromechanical relays to carry the fan load. Even relocating them outside the PDC still leaves you with design problems inherent with their design.

It's not beginner level stuff. But this is what I designed and built working with Dan Lesser.

Fits under my air box albeit in this pic it was still a rough fabrication.

This method would only be good for those Vipers with a smooth surface interior correct? Meaning 97' or older. I can't imagine it would look good on the textured surface of later models.

Re: The Carbon dip, my 2000 dash was textured, the company sanded the dash flat then dipped it ;)

Little update on the temperature problem.........

I have now done a couple of things, Changed the 3yr coolant and fitted a new 180 thermostat.
I also removed the coolant temperature sensor and looked closely at the 4 pins. One of the pins was black! I carefully cleaned the pin using a needle file and refitted the sensor. Put the original relay back in the low speed fan slot and tested with the engine running. Low speed fan is now working correctly!

I have now ordered a replacement temp sensor.

Something to take into consideration if you have this problem ;)

Temp gauge needle is now sitting at 12 ock dead centre, prior to this it has always been towards 1 or 2 ock.

Cheers for the help on the phone :)
