I'm new here and have been looking at Gen V's. Every car at a dealer that I have seen has open recalls for R28/29. I don't understand why they don't address the open recall before offering the car for sale? Anyway, I've heard only 5% of these cars will require engine replacement but I'd obviously like to avoid this. So should I avoid these cars with the open recall?

I think if you are serious about a said car. Tell the dealer to address the recalls before you give them money. That way they are showing what type of dealer they are and it is also easing your mind.

I am also in the market for a used Gen V. I do not want to have my new-to-me car down for replacement of an engine. Therefore, I won't buy a car with an open r28 recall unless it is a particularly good deal that would lead me to accept the possibility of that loss of use time. I really don't care if the car has had the engine replaced; however. In fact, I'm thinking that I would prefer it, for having the extended warranty and new production engine.

Remember, an open campaign for R29 is no big deal, just a valve cover replacement, it's only the R28 that leaves you with doubts....
Looking for a used G5 and have the same concerns as you. I would ask dealer to complete recalls and make sure all is good with oil test. There is one guy on forums that says his motor blew even after he passed the recalls but not confirmed. I think his user name is TAMPA something...

I've told two dealers to get the recall done then we can talk. That was 2 weeks ago, cars are still offered for sale today with open recalls, and no follow-up call from said dealers trying to sell/update recall progress, etc. One dealer told me they have a Viper tech, and perform repairs in house so why not perform the recall? I think they will just wholesale the cars vs. performing recall/selling to me or someone else.

Hard to know if the recall affects the prospect of a new car with no miles on it.

It may take dealers some time to get all of their own recalls done, and as said the R29 is nothing to be concerned with, but the R28 could involve the engine replacement. There's no reason you can't put a conditional offer on one that you like, noting whether you'd accept it if they need to replace the motor. I personally would have no issue buying one with a brand new engine while some others might think it the end of the world. Every new car I've bought came with a new engine, and I wish every used car I bought came with one too...we should all be so lucky ;)

I just bought a used 2013 car with open recalls....it had a 7 year 100k mile warranty.
I had the recalls done and was hoping it got a replacement motor as I plan to keep my car for a while.
I'm sure the dealer doesn't want to do the recall work because if the car needs a replacement motor, most potential owners will want a discount. In other words, it would hurt the sale price.

who told you you get extended warranty after the motor is replaced?
I based my statement on the following posts in the r28/r29 thread. Since Bill Pemberton is part of the Woodhouse team, I am assuming that his information is as reliable as it gets; although I have not seen a specific piece of documentation from FCA posted yet, which would be definitive. I have highlighted the pertinent parts in red.
Didn't read all the previous pages , but what I did view , quickly , I did not notice a notation that this is a Pro-Active situation from Dodge, that is likely to affect only around 5% of the consumers. Other note is if you just changed your oil , it is not likely they could find anything , if there was an issue, anyway. May need to take in for filter kit process when the car has some miles on it from the last oil change -imho. Lastly 2016s are definitely not involved. There will be a 2 year extention on powertrain coverage. Sure Mark will chime in later, he is at the Dyno at present.
Feel your pain, guys, yet keep in mind the first step is to essentially send in the kit and see if there is a concern. At present it is easy for the owners to all think the worst , but Dodge really believes it is only about 5% of the cars that will have an issue. After an oil change, which I understand will be free, and your filter is sent in, the next step will only be if there is a problem. Otherwise it is a free oil change for all intent and purpose and your car will get a powertrain extention. I will check and see if I got all the info correct, and find out if it is all 2013s and 2015s, as one individual questioned? Not any fun, but many of us remembered how much was reactionary in the past with Vipers , and at times nothing was done ( window regulators or head gaskets in Gen 1s come to mind) , but this time they are valuing the buyers of the Viper and checking on something , knowing it will have no consequence to 95% of the owners.
Bill, we all get the R29 regardless of outcome, correct? They R28 people get R29 at the same time? Or only if R28, comes back negative (no engine needed) only then R29?
That is the way I understand it. Was pretty sure on the extention also, but figure I should double check just to absolutely sure?
Confirmed the extention will only include those cars ( 2013-2014 ) actually affected by the R28 recall. Always good to double check, which is what I should have done before I listed that!! So , essentially , the 5% of the cars affected will get this benefit. Overall, small portion will ever see any concern, but being Proactive is a good move in my estimation.

Unfortunately, you may be right, the won't deal with it unless you commit. Keep looking, there are other cars for sale. Just call Bill P at Woodhouse, and be done with it!

So a non-matching numbers engine won't hurt resale value? I'm from the era where that was everything, maybe times they are a changin'! But I do like the conditional offer idea but the problem is, an offer without a deposit is really not an offer. Once you give $, sometimes it's tough getting it back if the deal falls through. Gotta think about this.

Your dealer is clueless. The results from the recall are emailed to the dealer in a few days. If they even really did it.
