Has your Viper script got corrosion or greyed up?
Here is a cheap easy tip to polish them up.

Remove the cover, In Gen IV its easy, buy 2 Garryflex rubbers, you can
find them cheap on Ebay,
they are used by jewellers to polish metals, get a fine 120 and a medium 240,
If quite bad use a 60 first
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=garryflex+block&tag=googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=50348387534&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=2585045455233104563&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=b&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_3yibov7esj_b

Work the script with the medium till corrosion is gone, mint up
with the fine and finish off with a little Autosol, results are excellent
one cover took me 20 mins

What does a Garry Flex rubber look like?

Is there something to put over the lettering afterward that would protect the new finished surface?

See the Garryflex rubbers in the amazon link in first post, I just wax polish the letters after,
bearing in mind once clean, a little autosol clean once a month keeps as new
