Hi guys,

I have a viper on order, and am a bit worried about the hood not having any kind of locking mechanism. I have searched the web for such a device, but found nothing. Could anyone help me find such a device, or, maybe even build it ?

Thanks.

Most people don't know where the latch is, it is sort of hidden. And, it sets the alarm off if you pop it. I don't see a way of locking it, you'd have to make your own pull cable and re-route it into the interior.

No :p
The issue is that the concept of no locking hood worries me.....OK, I'll be honest, I am a college student, and don't trust other college kids from messing with the car.

I'll get over it once the car is here, but for now, I'm trying to solve problems that most likely won't happen :)

You are going to use it to commute to college? That alone is scary, those college parking lots are usually full of beat up cars. Buy a beater :)

The car won't be driven daily, so exposure will be minimal. Thanks for caring, I never thought the internet community would give genuine advice.
Thanks again.

Seriously?

He has a legitimate question - I don't think "buy a beater" is a good response either.

Sadly there is nothing out there. You are lucky in the fact no one really knows you can pop the hood from the outside.

Thanks for your concern !!
I was actually thinking of building a cable "restrictor" that is attached to the vents .

You just solved your own problem.

There is also a feature where it can SMS you if your hood is popped while the locks are engaged.

Vipers have never had an engine compartment which can be locked. I have driven my Vipers well over 100,000 miles and have often parked them outside, over night, at hotel parking lots. (Even in Detroit, all the time! lol) I lock the car and don't worry about it. That is what insurance is for. I'd say, "don't sweat it", and enjoy your new Viper when you get it.

Really ?! If that's the case, then my problem is solved. Do you know how to engage this feature ?

Thanks. You definitely assured me that, odds are, no one will touch the car, but what if they do ? :)
(I know the answer to this one)

One thing you have to understand is that locks only keep "honest" people out. If the person is hell bent on getting in there, no lock is gonna stop them. Just don't put your car where this can happen.

This is what I fear.
Would you mind telling us the nature of their vandalization ?

You are absolutely right, but wouldn't make it more appealing for them to say "well, the hood isn't locked, so the owner is passively inviting people to "take a look" " lol

Not sure as far as a latch lock, but you can pin the hood and add it to an alarm system (aftermarket).

ViperSmith mentions that there is an SMS texting feature (if the hood is opened while the car is locked ) , can you please give details of how this works ?
Thanks

I think it is part of the UConnect system.

Aha ! does this require SIM usage (a dedicated SIM card for the car ) ??

http://www.driveuconnect.com/system/srt/

It looks like a copy of OnStar by GM.

But most alarms work on a ground impulse. If you can find the trigger wire of the doors, you can use a relay and a diode to connect to a hood pin switch or a movement switch to set off the alarm. If you use the UCONNECT system it will ping your phone or email account.

I think you do need to set up the car as a separate sim number.

Thanks , I'll be reading more on this Uconnect system :)
