View Full Version : Best gear ratio for a Gen5 Viper?

What would be the best rear gear ratio for your Vipers uses? If you roll race (1/2 mile or mile), drag racing, a gear for your local road course? What would you benefit from the most if you could change easily?
3.73
3.90
4.10
4.56????
Custom ratios?

You will need at least three categories: N/A, Supercharger and Turbocharger.
Most turbo cars that still see street use do not work well with high gear ratios.
Supercharged cars can be dependent upon the power level.
And N/A often depends on the intended use.

After having my 3.07 to ride out 4th, then putting a .85 5th in it, then swapping back to a 3.55, I think for 185 mph in 5th the 3.55 is the most fun. 3.07 made the car so lazy feeling.

Hey Mark....I installed 3:73 in my 15 SRT Arrow PCM installed (I think I bought the gears from you?)
I noticed that when launching the car at the drag strip on drag radials less risk of bogging.

3:55's have been great for everything from autocross to road racing to roll and 1/4 Mile for me.

For mostly street driving fun with a few track days per year, my ideal would be 3:73 gears (or even 3:90) combined with the .50 sixth gear for relaxed highway cruising.

IMHO, for most cars that are above stock hp 3.33 rear gears and Gen IV trans ratios would be just about perfect.

I think a 3.33 would be ideal. As it is I'm hitting the rev limiter in 4th gear with the OEM 3.55 on some tracks coming into the braking zone after a long straight. Makes no sense to upshift to 5th so I breath a little on the throttle. 3.33s would allow me to stay in the gas in 4th for most tracks.

Don't know ratio's but just like my C6 Z06s, 5th gear is an over driven gear and is terrible for roll racing.

That should be it. I used a smaller rear tire at Texas Mile to give us an approximate 3.33 ratio. We hit the 6600 RPM rev limiter in 5th at 191mph.

1st 2.26
2nd 1.58

3rd 1.19 1.30
4th 1.00 1.00

the things here is 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear is follow each other no lazy gear when it come to 4th you will found as stock one will reach speed 155 mph but 5th gear are short that will let you push tell the end to 193mph and also no lazy

I just ordered a cloth measuring tape so that I can properly measure tire circumference. The calculations we made were off by 10mph, but I think it was due to not having the tire diameter measured correctly. Then I am going to check my spread sheet against yours.

Your car has an independent 5th and 6th. You can change just the 6th. Call John Donoto at 248 921 4969.
He has a molded shipping carton for the 6060, he can send that to you to solve the logistics.

I do not want to confuse the discussion, but, I put a 2010 trans in my G5. It has the .79 5th and the .63 6th. It was out of a salvage car. The original owner must have done the the conversion.
if anyone is interested you have to use the G5 shifter and you have to drill/tap the G4 tail housing for the G5 viscous mount.

Sorry to resurrect this thread, but just checking after nearly 3 years, have opinions changed on best final drive? Also what about with the Heads and Cam and 9 Liter conversions. Does that affect your choice. Of course I understand there are variables here including your tire sizes but just interested to hear peoples updated thoughts. From my end I certainly think 5th gear needs changing as I do mainly track work, where there are a lot of long straights and so 5th is useless to me currently. I'm just not sure about final drive as I have been contemplating it for my upcoming 9.0 L extreme conversion. Having said that the 9.0 extreme also increases the redline to 6700rpm so that changes things a bit.

With the 9 liter I was going to change to like 3.33 or something, but now that I'm running a 28" rear tire I dont think I'm going to change anything.
I can do 99.5mph in 2nd, 132mph in 3rd and 157mph in 4th. I'd stick to the 3.55's if i were you, I think you'll be happy with them.

Yeah AZ. I know what you mean. As I will also be running DH or Michelin slicks which will be closer to 28" I think I may leave final drive. However I still think 5th gear needs changing though.

After COTA I think I'm leaving my 5th gear alone. With 157 in 4th i was only in 5th for a couple seconds, I doubt I will be on any faster tracks.

Yes I suppose it just depends on the circuit. Most of the circuits I play on involve high speed straights where I need to maximise my potential and so need a shorter 5th. So need to pull well, beyond fourth gear. Mclarens at COTA and other fast circuits on straights do 170-175. But of course they have 7 speed flappy paddles so gear ratios are different. Any footage from COTA in the 9.0?

Pretty easy, can you tolerate a 5% higher rpm. If you now have the the .63, 6th gear, it might be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Understood. But why are you therefore wanting to change gear ratios for? 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile drag races? Very high speed runs over 140 mph?
For simple street use I don't see a problem with the OEM ratios. You currently have 0.63 atm right? I guess you could go to a 0.5 ratio for 6th to drop revs and improve mpg..

I just contacted Dan for headers and some bolt-on Preformance, It was his suggestion on changing the rear gear as he said "it'll wake up a street car" I could see doing the 1/4 1/2 drag races maybe at some point however at this point I just use the car as a street car.

So...for most purposes there would be little to no need for this change? Dan Cragin has suggested a few changes but I have been hesitant in changing out the 3.55 for 3.73.
I think as we spoke I had mentioned having a heads/cam upgrade and he was of the option that I could achieve a more fun factor by changing out the gears and not bothering the motor or voiding the warranty.

I just purchased a 2016. It has the 3:55 and liked mentioned prior it is quite dead from a start. I am already thinking about changing out to 3:73. You can't use 6 gear until at least 70MPH.
I know the car is designed for 200, but I never go there. I do a few track days and feel it would be a big plus with 3:73
I came from a Roush Mustang with a 100 more Hp and 3:73. I miss that pick up!
I have scheduled a track day next Saturday, I will make a decision after the Track Day.

You gain 5% torque advantage with the 3.73 gears. You gain 18% with a 2.66 1st gear. Then you change to a .63 6th gear and life is beautiful.

My car had 3.91 rear in it when I bought it, used. I also have the 0.63 6th since it’s an SRT. Turning 2,300 rpm at 70 mph gets old! It started howling so I went back to the stock 3.55 rear which dropped rpms down to 2,000 at 70 mph. Oddly enough, I ran 11.6 @ 127 mph in the quarter with both ratios so I didn’t notice a difference at the drag strip.
If you have the 0.50 rear then go for it, otherwise I’d recommend sticking with the 3.55.

Road Course. The only time I Dragrace is in the One Lap of America.
I have found speed in gear is most important on a Road Course. Figure out how fast you will ever go and work backwards. For me it is around 170 mph. Then figure out what gear ratio get's you closest to that in 4th or 5th gear. I use a tire that's 27.95" tall so a 4.10 diff gear would get me where I want to be in 5th.
Problem is I do not like the 5-4 downshift. I much prefer the 4-3 for downchanges. In addition I have gotten very used to the 2-3 upshift at the track. I am not perfect but pretty good. That means I want to look at the lower numbers for the differential. A 3.23 get's me 164 in 4th and that's fast enough for the tracks I go to. In addition the gear spacing and subsequent RPM drop is less from 3-4 and it will pull slightly harder in 4th with the 3.23's than a car with 4.10's will pull in 5th. So that's what I would want on a road course. For the tire height I use and the stock transmission I would turn it into a 2-3-4 car on a roadcourse and use 3.23's. That is if they are available which I do not know?? lol!!
