Getting very tired of replacing the birdcage by the side of the road on my 98 GTS. I am getting good at it though.....can do it pretty much by feel in about 3 minutes. I know one can remove the pedal set and do the "drill through and bolt" fix......and I may end up doing that......but I wonder if there's a "tougher" birdcage out there?

I keep 4-5 of em in my glovebox, but they break so easily......has anyone seen anything tougher that works just like the birdcage?

Wonder why they are breaking? Is the Nylon bush worn that it is putting extra strain on the cage? Touchwood I have not had one fail yet!

Yes, because my car was never put together with one, it has not broken either. It does sound like there may be an alignment issue tho. Worth checking into if you don't want the other clipped style connection.

Thanks y'all. I agree that there's probably an alignment issue since it happens more to me than anyone else in the club here in the south. I'll have to get up there and look more closely....I seem to recall that I have some vestige of a metal clip that looks like the one in the pic. I'm aggravated enough by the cage that I'd be willing to weld em together (if they weren't required to move relative to each other of course).

If you have the clip like my car has, then you don't have the cage. It's one or the other, and they were built using both. Not sure where the transition was tho.

Love to see a pic of this birdcage assembly. I haven't had any issues.

Thanks for the pic, but is this piece used instead of the nylon looking pieces in Dave's pic? If someone has a pic of the installed system it would be great. I'm going to take a look at my set up tomorrow.

As a side note, my throttle pedal has had a buzzing type rattle when ever my foots not on the pedal, it drives me nuts. I'm going to have to solve that issue. My old ACR which was built an hr after this car was built on the same day, did not have the rattle.

The setup in my pic is OEM from the factory. The birdcage setup is OEM from the factory. They (Dodge) used both these setups building the cars. They do not interchange parts from one to the other. You either have entirely one, or entirely the other.

I had the same problem with my 02, RT10. Talked with Chuck Tator and he supplied me with the metal clip from a Gen 1, problem solved.

I'd say Tweety would be much happier in that cage, than that black plastic thing!

Until the cage breaks down on the side of the road again. And then Tweety is stranded. Alone, without his cage.

Wow. I just realized. Saying Tweety might get you banned for being a racist. I sure hope no one sees this thread.

Tweety was his name. Is tweety a racist term I don't know?

I am honestly supposed you have broken so many. It makes me wonder if there is a bigger problem than the "birdcage" here. I have heard of them breaking on occasion but not to the point where you need to travel with them. Can you have one fabricated out of metal? It won't fix the reason the plastic ones are breaking, but may be tough enough that they don't break anymore.

Something must be out of alignment that they break so often on you.

Best of luck getting it taken care of.

It sure seems like OP should convert to the bushing/washer/clip system. I'm assuming that the groove for the metal clip is on the post even on the cars that got the birdcage device instead of the clip?
