Loads! Its a Race Engine first put together by DC Performance many years ago, Just got it back from Arrow after full rebuild.

Carrillo H beam conrods, JE Pistons and rings, ported and polished heads,Spec Performance lightweight flywheel and Stage 2 Clutch, ARP Head bolts, Roller rockers, Etc, Etc.....

Not cheap!

Biggest problem was finding an engine hoist with a long enough lift arm to get over the front nose of the car! Ended up buying one as could not find any companies near us to hire one from :(

Still at least I can now hire it out should someone need it.

There is a whole lot of work to do yet, a brand new PCM/ECM controller has been purchased to old controller has been removed, there's a fair bit of electrical work to do, loads of replacing rusted bolts with shiny new Stainless steel ones throughout the car, flushing out of old rads and oil coolers and I'm mainly doing the work on Weekends, the exhaust system needs sorting too. I think at least a month.......or.......... Car has been off the road for over 5 years so another couple of months will not hurt.

Full album of work to date here :)

Wow, very impressive. What happened to the car that it was off the road for that long?

Long story, but the main reason was the Owner did not know who to use to help him get the engine running properly, the car always seemed to have an engine check light on , there are very few Viper tech people in the UK and sadly the engine had a partial seizure! This damaged the crank and some liners, Pistons did not look great either!
It was all to do with the management system :( AEM Which is now bined!
The next issue was finding someone to do the engine work......Sadly Steve got let down by so many So called Race Engine builders (in the United Kingdom) that said they could do this and that, and nothing happened after the engine was sent to these rebuilders. We all know of RSI and the waiting times there, what I can tell you is there are many more companies over here that are far worse!
So after YEARS of broken promises by various companies I Stepped in (as a voluntary VOA Member) to Help Steve bring his car back to life, We packaged up all the engine parts and shipped it off to Todd at Arrow Racing in the USA, they rebuilt the Engine. Not the cheapest way to do things with duty and shipping costs but we did not know who to trust!
Viper Baz UK is also helping with the engine side of things (electrical tuning, tech info) Meanwhile I have been going around the car doing the manual work of detailing and cleaning, Engine fitting, Gearbox etc.

Thanks for the background Information! I can imagine who difficult it is to find a shop that you can really trust, especially for us Europeans! I would not want to give my car to any of the Chrysler/Fiat techs here in Germany. Already the imagination of them closing the hood using their "normal" technique (meaning smashing it down just like with any standard vehicle) would make me have some sleepless nights....

It is great that you support the owner that much and I am looking forward to every tiny update until this Baby burns some rubber again :)

Long live the (Viper) Queen! :United_Kingdom:

Not the cheapest way to do things but the right way. Look at the heartbrake caused by shitty work. The thing that pisses me off about poor work being done on these cars is, if you are a mechanic, it shouldn't be that tricky. Super heavy power add ons, forced induction, yeah that takes some special know how but your average stuff is just not that hard. People on here with little experience really wrenching on their cars will install their own exhaust or thermostat. A mechanic should be able to do that blindfolded. Yet even here you see it look like a drunk chimp got after it. It's two more cylanders, but it's not a freaking spaceship. Glad to hear you are putting the Viper goodwill forward and helping keep it out of the scrap heap.

I commend you.

So can someone please tell me the secret of trying to fit the gearbox :(

I have the car Jacked up on Axel stands at the front, I have the rear of the car jacked up and the rear wheels sitting on Oak pallet boards, I have the engine tilted slightly down at the back (but have it resting on a 2 x 1" wooden block by the bell housing and frame so that the new engine mounts are not taking the full weight of the engine. The gearbox was test fitted before installing the engine to make sure the clutch plate was centered and the alignment tool still fits perfectly centre.

I have jacked up the Son of a Bitch Gearbox and tried to install it 3 times now but I Just don't seem to be able to get that final push into the pilot bearing! I can just get one or two bolts to almost fit but but I would strip the threads if I tried to tighten them to pull the gearbox in closer. I have measured the end of the gearbox shaft with vernier calipers to double check all is good and as I said it fitted fine before I installed the engine on the dry run!

Sadly I have a really weak shoulder and have little strength in it but surely it should not be this hard to fit a bloody gearbox? I spent all day yesterday mainly by myself trying to get the bloody thing to fit and just could not do it. I was using a trolley jack to help lift the gearbox but when you need that last wiggle or push I just could not do it :(

Any advice needed please. I came away from the car yesterday really disappointed that I had failed in the task I set myself. :(

Great work Mark.. Sorry i could'nt make it for the engine in day...Ill be the to help do gearbox and all the other bits and peices.. Was fun hanging upside down changing the master and chasing wires where the EM and OE PCM should of been..

Slow process but when going over other peoples work you need to check out everything first..

For some reason there are two wire removed from the PC harness as well.. and two extras added for grounds which i belive was part of the recal/upgrade ..

Woo Hoo! :dancingman: Got the Transmission fitted today, Big thanks to Madmax Ade our UK Prez. He came over and gave me a hand, turns out it was the Gearbox to bellhousing alignment spigots being the Pain in the Butt. With Adrian up front guiding it in gently tightening a couple of bolts either side of the Gearbox and me at the other end of the gearbox giving it a wiggle and pushing the faces came together.
Cant say I want to do that job again in a hurry! Fitted a new Transmission polly mount from Roe Racing and a nice shiney Billet Aluminium crossmember mount from Mark at Ipsco.

Headers, Next job on the List :)

When I did the clutch on my 06 I found the same thing with the transmission. It kicked my ass a few times before I was able to get it. I guess installing the transmission to the engine before dropping it in is out of the question?

I don't know for certain but that's about an 8 foot long, 1000lb apparatus to be slinging around. Perhaps of you had the car high enough up, and with the right engine hoist, you could tip it at a high enough angle to get it down and in and then flatten it out to the required angle for mounting. Definitely doesn't sound like a cakewalk.

I could be way wrong though. Perhaps the trans tunnel is big enough it's not as hard as I imagine but I don't see it in my mind's eye that way. I would be interested to hear if thats the way to attack it.

Fatboy 18

I did assemble the transmission to the engine prior to fitting the engine in the car but then decided it was too big a risk maneuvering it into the car! I had a two tonne Engine Hoist but the more you extend the boom arm out, the lifting capacity reduces.
Now not being good at mathematics, I had no idea if the crane would have taken the weight? The Engine was suspended on the end of the boom arm then adding another 3ft long transmission and 135lbs I was scared something might go wrong.
Remember This is not my car but a friends, How would you explain that his new rebuilt arrow engine with now attached Spec clutch and Transmission have falen into the car and there's a lot of damage!!!!
I could not have lived with myself, so I made the Decision to put the engine in first, then attach the gearbox. Anyway its done now (thank god) :)

Header install tomorrow :)

It's a bit of a challenge sliding the trans in the way you did it. I did the same as I felt it was way to risky to do both especially when your doing the job yourself. I modified a trans Jack and welded up a special fixture to support the back of the engine without having any blocks or additional jacks on the ground. All in all an engine /trans swap in the Viper is about as simple and painless as it gets. I'd say it's easier than a '69 Camaro.

Had an interesting one last Weekend, I had to re attach the engine earth lead at the front of the engine. Its attached to the rear threaded shaft on the Belt tensioner pulley here's a pic.
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5699/21233617354_1f3bd80eff_c.jpg

Now as I was undoing the nut on the threaded shaft I heard a noise of metallic parts falling to the floor? It turns out someone had placed a series of shims between the back of the black tensioner plate and the face of the engine timing cover! I have never come across this before?

Here's a pic of the back of the belt Tensioner
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5815/21844483342_b9e5efc9c6_c.jpg

I refitted the belt tensioner without the shims and used a straight edge from the Alternator pulley to the face of the belt tensioner pulley and all seems good?
I guess I will not be able to check complete alignment until the engine is up and running but I did think it was odd for them to be there as there is also a locating key tab on the back of the tensioner pulley body that locates on the timing cover face, the more one packs out the tensioner the less that key tab locates onto the timing cover!

Anyone else come across this?

Our tech here, Eddie Martin, is one of the best in the country. Perhaps you guys could fly him over twice a year. Cheaper than fixing what these apes did to that car before you stepped in. Luckily they didn't score the cylanders or nothing happened to trash the block.

Congratulations on completing all that work. So glad it didn't end up scrapped.

Slash cut side exhausts next to replicate the original 91 Daytona car. The hole for the exhausts will be below the side mirror! It's gonna be LOUD!

The Wiring still needs a sort out inside the car and the seats are getting some additional colour too :)

There's a problem with the door locks at the moment? I have reset the key fobs and can start the car but if you close the doors the small orange led light by the door handles is staying on all the time? If I manually lock the doors from the inside the led goes off. Im wondering if the additional aftermarket alarm is interfering with the operating system?
As Barry said in an earlier post its a PIA trying to sort out other peoples work and tracing back wires to make sure things have been done correctly! Also seeing as the car has sat for so long wires and terminals may have corroded which can also cause problems. :(
We will get it sorted but this is yet another hurdle to cross over towards the end goal.

Loving it. Nice touch with the true race exhaust. The neighbors are gonna love you guys for that. By neighbors, I mean Scotland! They are gonna be up there going "what in the damn hell was that?" Of course, some of them may like it. They will wonder how many sheeppower it has.

So what's up with the sides sills to fit that exhaust? Modifying the stock ones or are ones from the race car available? And, not to be nit-pickey but I am honestly very interested and very impressed by this project, what about the rear cutout for exhast tips? Gonna fill it in?
--you could always run both. Like hot roders used to do where you had a diverter hooked up to an actuator. They would hit the button and turn it from a street legal exhaust to basically open headers. I haven't seen that trick in a while but used to see it on some rat rodded pickup trucks. I'm not actually recommending it but it would be a hell of a conversation piece : )

Really cool on this engine... Taking notes for future reference when I eventually rebuild the Viper engine.

Had a similar problem with a C3 Corvette we pulled an engine from as well. What I did was get one of the front tires off and brought the engine in from the side and slowly moved the hoist in from the side. Worked well and I had to get over a fender. With no hood in place on the Viper, I would guess it might be easier.

Yes, that would work, you do need the car low down, you have to watch out for the pipes on top of the power steering rack too! you do need an extra set of eyes all around when lifting and lowering. Very easy to get it wrong!

Looks great! On the pic of the black car....is it just pipe from the manifolds / headers? How did they get any type of muffler etc to fit? I'm catless and would love not to smell my exhaust all the time in the car lol!...

Viper Baz worked on that car, Where the pipe bends there is a gate on the exhaust pipe which can be controlled from inside the car, you can open the gate to divert the gasses directly out or close the gate and use the hi flow cats and side pipes which exit from the rear. :)

Thanks!! ^^^ I love your set-up on the 91 car! I REALLY like that idea of the side exit, cool sills, no fumes...well done!!!

Need a bit of help, on the Rear wheel fender there are some large flange black rivets that hold the rear fender panel on and connect the inner rear fender.
A normal Blind rivet is the wrong type. I believe they are called "Flare rivets". Anyone know where I can get them? I only need 6. :) I am not sure but they may be nylon?

Can anyone confirm this?

You can see one of the rivets in this picture on the right

Thanks to the Wizard Chuck Tator, Rivets are on the way :)

But we now have another issue, After sending the engine to Arrow, We purchased a brand New ECM from Arrow and they tuned the engine and controller. We also purchased a brand new STC Tuner to accept maps. We now need a Map to delete the rear 02 sensors as they will not work with the new exhaust system.
Latest we have heard is that Arrow want the new ECM back to the factory! WTF!

Anyone else heard of this? Sending your controller back to the factory for a remap?

Update: Arrow tune on the new PCM was set to include rear 02 sensors, we contacted Arrow and they have sent us a new flash program to delete the rear 02 Sensors. We have not loaded it in yet.
the car passed vehicle inspection today :) and was Driven for the first time in 6 years!
