For those trapped by winter and looking for some good news: Tail of the Dragon Event dates May 30 - June 1. This year we hope for 70+ Vipers. Don't be left out of the best roads in the southeast. Great roads, great folks, and great cars. What could be better?

Nothing could be better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love love love love love this road trip. Last year I did 1700 miles in 4 days and was not the one who drove the farthest. Totally worth it.
Side note, gotta see if the new Margaritaville hotel in Pigeon Forge is going to be open by that time. I've gotta stop by there for a beverage.

Suggestions? leave some space in trailer for the "day of shopping" :D
As of right now, we will indeed be at the Greystone Lodge (at the Aquarium) again. We are already planning the event and hope to return to the Crystelle Creek Grill and the Cherokee Grill on Friday and Saturday nights respectively. This year we hope to have 75 Vipers in the parade. I will do my best on the weather but rain or shine be there - May 31-June 2. For those who want to start early, I will ask the hotel to give the same rates for early birds. Boy you folks are restless. Must be WINTER! Could I have a few more days to plan please...? Meanwhile, for those with snow, go sit in your cars and make engine sounds. For those who can get out and drive, do it. LOL

Sorry Joel it's a long winter and we're excited :D
I'm organizing the convoy from Ohio. We're working on getting a good crowd to come down and join this year.
No problem sir. Right now they are reinforcing picture taking roofs along the TOD, the parkway, and the skyway. I have Gatlinburg looking for enough pizza boxes to last the 3 day weekend. The authorities said something about these things needing to be done since our last trip through but I didn't get it all... Maybe it had something to do with red and yellow cars?

Those moving apexes are not nearly as bad as the tractor trailers that sometimes use the road. I have had to make my Goldwing real small to get by a truck on the Tail one day. And with me on it, that is damn near impossible. Plus, I think I damaged my seat during the maneuver... at least it took several minutes to get it out of my - well you know.

Are we at Greystone Lodge or the new, unnamed hotel? It's early and you confused me....
Diane
We are at the Greystone Lodge and that will be the hotel the AL/TN Club will use as a host hotel. The folks there have been very supportive and, unless they can't accommodate us, that's where we will be. Other folks may plan to stay in other hotels but the Greystone has covered, secure parking. It is early yet and they are still working on the hotel but they have lots of refurbished rooms. As it is 13 freakin' degrees outside, I wish it were May too! Right now plans are for the Greystone Lodge, meeting at the Crystelle Creek Grill on Friday, parade ending at the Cherokee Grill on Saturday. We will have a caravan from Knoxville to Gatlinburg on Friday and hope to meet up with other folks at other areas too. Please think warm thoughts. See you all in MAY when it is warm.

Since I'm snowed in again, I booked at Greystone. Did we set up a group for the event? They couldn't find it when I called.
Thanks!
Diane
Gosh you folks are bored - just as I am. We have talked to the folks at Greystone but they haven't set up a group yet. We'll get it done. We are trying to get a group of rooms together and they are still working on some areas. We wanted to get rooms that are near the covered parking - maybe on the same floor or 2 floors.

The 2012 Outlaw Run on The Tail: 2984
While I enjoyed it, there are much better roads that are much less conspicuous. LE loves to hide in the bushes on The Tail...
Our event is more about the "tale" of what happens over 3 days than the "Tail of the Dragon" road. I would agree there are better roads in the area and we try to get folks out on a number of them. It is a happening not just a drive up a road.
To give you folks something to think about, we are trying to get an idea of how many t shirts to order. Thanks to Warren from the Georgia club, the design will be similar to last year's shirt. We will use a different color or colors and can offer shirts in long or short sleeve. If interested, PM me or send an email - joel.hausler@mtsu.edu - and we'll start a list. Price should be $20-25 depending on the number of shirts. Just think how good you'll look come end of May. Be there or be square! - 3014

HLANDIS, great idea on the convoys. I'm organizing the Ohio convoy, so anyone in Ohio, western PA, Indiana, Kentucky, Ontario, Michigan, etc would be heading the same direction and are more than welcome to join us.
Ohio Convoy:
Meeting location: Cincinnati (exact place TBD, probably north side off 71)
Meeting time: Noon, Thursday May 29th (eat lunch and then depart by 1:30pm)
Hey Stretch, I know a few of us from the indy area are planning to go. Will get with them to try to meet with you in Cincinnati as well if thats ok.

That would be fantastic, you guys are more than welcome to join us. I already sent Steve the initial info of date & time. As we get closer and get the details nailed down I will make sure you guys get all the info.
A couple years ago I had a convoy of 5 or 6 cars from IN/KY that went on the trip. A Viper convoy cruising down 75 is lots of fun.

Side note, gotta see if the new Margaritaville hotel in Pigeon Forge is going to be open by that time. I've gotta stop by there for a beverage.

If you get Jimmy to come hang in May, I'll consider you my hero for life - I can't tell you how much of a Parrothead I am.. :D
I agree but the last Parrothead concert in Nashville left me and my wife beer soaked from sitting in front of drunks. I'll buy the songs but I am done in person with the drunks aka parrotheads. They start at 10 am and party till they puke - literally. And this is from someone who saw JB in Chattanooga when Come Monday was just on the charts and he drew a crowd of 100 people at the Holiday Inn. Now he's got more money than .. but the music is still good.

I've been driving the Dragon since the late '90's when I'd come down with another marque club. Regardless of the cars, one rule remains & this is crucial to know especially if you're a newbie: NEVER CROSS THE CENTER LINE! We came upon that scenario once; 2 cruiser bikes head on into a car. Life flight.
Now, scary stories aside... It's one of the more incredible public roads you'll ever drive (and the entire area; I really love the Foothills Parkway for it's flowing curves & the Skyway for it's views). Not sure I can make it with my work travel, but you'll have a blast!
Remember, smooth is fast. Don't drive over your head. It's a public road, not a racetrack.

Done, welcome aboard!
I posted a thread specifically in the Ohio section for the convoy as well and plan to keep it updated as we get closer.
OK here is the latest, greatest, and most up-to-datest on the Tail of the Dragon Event. We are up to over 30 rooms reserved already and it is not even March yet. We have the parade permit in hand. Crystelle Creek Grill and the Cherokee Grill have been notified we are coming and are stocking up on adult beverages. We are working on ordering the same weather we had last year and by that I mean perfect! Caravans from the north, south, east, and west have been planned. Stretch is shooting for 20 cars in the caravan from Ohio. Carolina already has a dozen cars. Folks are coming from Canada and Alaska. There might even be some native Tennesseans to will lead you through the wilderness of great curvy roads. The highways and byways will not be safe. The parade will be filmed and copies available to show your friends what they missed as 75 (our goal) Vipers roar through the streets of Gatlinburg. Special TOD T-shirts will be available in short and long sleeve - reserve yours now - $20 short sleeve and $25 long sleeve - Royal Blue with TOD on the back. After all, you got to look good when you get home and tell tales about the tail. The twisty and turny roads will be ready - will you? I can't believe you would even consider missing it!

Correct. times will be determined, but we've had to meet/depart earlier from CB each year due to the size of the group. I'm guessing arrival 8am -9am ish to depart at 10. That gives us time to mingle, socialize, line up and be FUELED UP ready to roll.

Ron, this is what I put in the Ohio convoy thread to give people a basic idea of what to expect based on the plans from the previous years.
Event details (based on previous trips, just to give you an idea of what you're getting into )
Thursday 5.29
- All day road trip starting from our meeting point in Cincinnati to Gatlinburg, TN.
Friday 5.30
- Depart the hotel and drive to Cracker Barrel for breakfast. It's about a 90 minute drive. Usually the Cracker Barrel west of Knoxville off Campbell Station Road (there are multiple close to there).
- Leave breakfast to run the Cherahola Skyway & the Tail of the Dragon.
- Drive back to Gatlinburg for dinner.
Saturday 5.31
- Scenic driving through the mountains with a stop for lunch.
- Evening parade through Gatlinburg (this is pretty cool).
Sunday 6.30
- Start the drive back still grinning from all the fun you've had.

Yes. We will have a detailed itinerary, map, phone #s (not mine LOL). with a group this large, there is always a few that get separated from one of the many groups due to traffic and other reasons (not drinking enuff). Cell reception is pretty bad in that area.
We are going to do our best to have a turn by turn nav sheet for folks because we will get "stretched" (no pun) out and it is likely that all folks will not want to go at the same speed. When we get a good idea of how many cars will be in the convoy from Knoxville, we can get a route planned. There is the easy way - with fewer turns - and the fun way - more turns - to get to Tellico Plains. From there it is still 100 miles to Gatlinburg so the whole trip is right around 200 miles - see the problem? But, in the past, it has been hard to keep folks on schedule. One person 10 minutes late will make the whole group an hour late at the end of the drive. We'll do our best to keep the group together but bring a GPS and try to remember it is about fun not frustration.

You won't want to miss dinner Friday (great social time) and the Parade of all parades thru center of G'burg on Sat eve followed by dinner at the end of strip. We bring everything to a halt. :D

Not official yet. The website has moved the expected opening from "Spring 2014" to "Summer 2014". So the good news is that it's on the website, the bad news is that it may not open until after our trip. I'm going to call them to see if I can get details as we get closer.
If it's not open we could still get a group together for dinner that Thursday night if people are interested.

Great thanks for the help guys. Looks like I will be in on the all day Friday stuff and may be able to hop in on the parade Saturday evening possibly. Looking forward to this!
I would suggest Crystelle Creek if you are in Gatlinburg anyway. Nice place, good food, plenty of parking, they actually WANT us to come, and you can warm the place up for Friday night. If you are interested, I can call the folks there to see if they can accomodate 2 nights of crazies.

Sounds good, I know for sure that we'll have 2 vipers from LA going thurs night(4 ppl total). If not Margaritaville, anywhere would be cool. I'm sure there are plenty of others out there that will be in thurs. night also. Ill keep an eye out for details!

Yep I saw the post and talked to him for a bit last night. He is going to check his schedule and hopefully be able to join the convoy. So pumped for May!!!!
I'll call Margaritaville this week to see if that's a possibility and let you guys know. If not, we can get something else planned for Thursday. I am hoping our convoy rolls in there by about 7pm.

Not too long though. I am looking at a 7 hour drive IF I have nice weather. Looking forward to the drive up there form the depths of Alabama.................. :D
I plan to be there Tuesday night, let me know if there are any early birds showing up, I planned to be stocked for nightly activities.............. :D
Believe it or not, I'm still getting inquiries from all over the country. Once again, May 30-June 1. Greystone Lodge at the Aquarium. Address: 559 Parkway, Gatlinburg, TN 37738 Phone (800) 451-9202 Almost 50 rooms booked. Please let us know if you are bringing a trailer so we can be sure we have adequate parking. As of now, 4 folks have said they are bringing trailers. I heard Stretch is buying the first round at Crystelle Creek Friday night but that may have been a rumor started by a red viper owner or maybe a blue viper owner. Someone started it... but we know yellow viper owners got the bucks to go with all that speed!!

We have a request from Ronny Landis (HLANDIS on the forums). We are going to do some filming for a video of the event and Ronny would like to know who would be available Thursday to do some filming on 441 above Gatlinburg. They want to do some aerial shots of Vipers on the road - no Vipers will be harmed during the filming. If you will be in town on Thursday please PM me or Ronny so we can have you in the film and get an idea of who might be available. This is a chance for all the red and yellow cars to really look good - and fast.

Tyrone and I are planning to try to get the Ariel shots starting around 1 pm thursday. We figured that would give those late sleepers time to clean up, have lunch then do the shoot. We will only have 1 hour so well do the best we can with that. Once times are guaranteed ill post again.
Also shooting what Tyrone called B roll shots on Wednesday also if anyone wants to join then. That will be an early day since we will be getting a sunrise time lapse from clingmans dome! After that, various scenic shots, viper shots etc throughout the mountains.
Then Friday and Saturday its on!! All day filming of EVERYTHING!! Lol.
PS, Tyrone asked if we can get a "chase" car that would really help in getting some unique shots, maybe someone with an extra seat? Not all weekend just for a few shots here and there.

Dragon would have been great, but some locals advised that due to tree cover it would be really difficult to get good shots.
Also, we only have the chopper for 1 hour and flight round trip would eat up a lot of filming time.
We were told they can only fly at 80 MPH max.
I think this will still be awesome footage!!

I've been there every year since the 90's. (It's the perfect 5 day road trip for me) It rains every time.....
This is not BS:
12? years ago, I saw the largest hail I've ever seen, just north of Gatlinburg, at a motel. No $hit, it was door knob to baseball sized (this is not BS). I was glad to have my bike under cover. Every car in the lot was damaged, including broken windshields!
Prey for good weather.... There's no good cover for a viper in the rain, on the road.........

Well another Dragon event in the books!! Best year ever! The turnout was amazing, the cars were amazing, and of course the people were even more amazing!
Thanks to all who organized, planned, and help put this together. GREAT JOB!
It was so cool to meet, talk, and DRIVE with so many that share our enthusiasm and passion for these cars.
I look forward to seeing everyone again and hope all have a safe trip back home!
BTW,
VIPERS: 70+,
DRAGON: 0 = SLAYED

Just got home. At least most of me. Wanted to thank everyone for coming. Great time - great people - great cars! Over 76 cars in attendance and a few strays that were hard to count. Chip says next year is the 10th anniversary and we're going to shoot for 100 cars. Right now I'd like 100 ZZZZ's.
Special thanks to: the Ackleys who had us to their place to share the spotlight with the Wolf-Dog Foundation. Maurice for taking the time to come and share a good time with us and document that we all don't live on trailers on a cliff - well most of us. To our special friends from the Carolinas and the "Stretch" convoy for the support of our efforts. To the Florida contingent who made it up only to find it was hotter in Tennessee than in Florida. To our Canadian friends who found their money was actually worth more here - hey! To Ronny and Tyrone for their tireless work on the video. And to all who journeyed from far and wide to make this happen. Thanks for coming. Thanks for being safe. And, most of all - thanks for being our Viper friends!!!! To the rest of you who thought about it but didn't come - there is always next year.

With all the accolades soon to follow, I wish to simply say "Thank you!" for an unforgettable time for my wife and me and especially your kind and unselfish dedication to the VOA and the priceless time (when you could have been sleeping last night) that you spent with a new member like me.
Sincerely,
Dave

I'd also like to say Thank You to all those involved. This was my first year for the dragon. After a couple years of hearing Stretch and Kevan sayin "You've never been?" "You've gotta go!" My wife and I finally made the trip down and what it trip it was. From what I understand it was a record year for viper inattendance. It might as well have been a mini NVE for as many cars and regions that were represented. Thanks to all for your hard work and dedication to the members and the club. I already have the dragon marked in my phone for 2015! I'll post my pics soon. :dude3:
(555th post :))
Patrick - I told you guys I'd come out with you but I sold my last t-shirt and video at 10:15 pm or so. The next thing I know, I'm waking up looking at the ceiling. Unfortunately it was in my hotel room - not out at the party with you guys. Thanks again for all of you coming and making TOD IX a success.

Joel - Sometimes I attend Viper events and don't realize how much fun I had until a few days after it's over. Well, this event was NOT one of those. My FUN FACTOR gauge was pegged from the time I arrived! Thanks to you, this was ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL from beginning to end. I cannot express the gratitude I have toward all of your efforts. You are a CLASS ACT!!!
Unfortunately, I am now coming off the Dragon "high" and becoming immensely depressed that I have to wait another year to do this again. :( That's how great it really was. YOU DA MAN!!!
Brian
Awesome event indeed. Thank you!

Joel, no problem about coming out...there's always next year.. :)
Brian, I know EXACTLY what you mean about coming off the high - we've been just kind of moping around here tonight not really sure what do with ourselves now that we're back home. I hate having to go through that but the fun we have and the memories we make are worth it in the end!

Well 13 hours to get home and it was well worth it again. Can't wait for next year. I had a good time my first time last year and had an even better time this year. It was nice to reunite with the friends that were made last year and i got to meet some more great people. It is such a great event put on by a bunch of amazing people. I want to thank everyone that had a hand in putting this together.
Excellent job everyone and you couldn't ask for a group of nicer people.

One of our (Lisa and I) Tail of Dragon shots.
Y'all mark your calendars for same weekend for next year. Will be the 10th anniversary for this AL/TN event. Could we hit 100 Vipers next year?????
Either way, It will be tough to out-do this past weekend, but with the help, and attendance of such great people and Viper enthusiasts like yourselves, we'll give it a shot. :dude3:

A bit of housekeeping. We found a radio and several folks did not pick up their videos. We can arrange to have everything returned and videos mailed. Let me know and Tim Morrison will arrange to get your stuff to you. Thanks again for attending.

I want to say a big THANK YOU to Joel, Chip, Tim, Ronny, the AL/tennessee chapter and this event was a BLAST, still on a TOD weekend high, but starting to come back to reality now ( feeling depressed), lol), it was def. one for the books, you guys really make one feel appreciated and like one more of the group!!, So looking forward to next time, really i can't thank you enough, also to ALL my carolina Members who made me feel like Family!!!, all of you have a friend in the upstate!!!.
Joel, my daughter and I had a fantastic time! Thank you so much to you and everyone that volunteered time to arrange the hotel, dinners, Maurice's visit (uber Viperholic!), lunch at the Ackley's, tee shirts, gifts (someone say 'shine?), driving routes, and the parade permit (very cool!). Everyone we met was just super...that is a hallmark of the Viper -- great cars and wonderful folks. This was our first trip and we're looking forward to next year.
