View Full Version : Paint chipping next to hood vents

Has anyone noticed the paint chipping in the corners of the hood air vents; specifically on the GTS hood.? The tolerance (gap) between the hood and those vents (the point closest to the windshield) is almost non existent on my car. So when the hood is opened, or possibly under hard acceleration, it appears that the vent is putting pressure in that corner, and has chipped the paint on both sides. Taking it to the dealership Saturday.

oh man i wouldn't be happy about that with your matte paint! i'd wonder if there is a way to put some kind of felt or something on the inside of the vents to prohibit them from moving

As they had a problem with some vents popping out while driving ( I believe on the passenger side ) I wonder if yours is a little loose and moves around under speed / under pressure to where it just kept bumped around until it chipped it? Sucks!

Vent fitment on every car I've seen has varied. Friend with an orange TA has lost two of his front left vents already. I've seen a few others with busted fastener clips, even on brand new cars. It seems that the hood hole cutouts aren't consistent, and the vent molds aren't a good "universal" fit for the tolerances. Yours might be even tighter, most of the front two vents on all hood seem to wiggle a little when you push them side to side. On my '13, they had to replace all six vents because they fit loose. The new set fit tighter, so I know they've revised some of those parts.

I know that the dealership will probably try to fix. I have already told them that is fine as long as I don't notice, which will probably be very tough to do. If not, I will request that they send to Prefix for a complete hood repaint (I will offer to pay shipping back and forth).

I'd be wary of a full hood repaint, since all of the body panels are painted at the same time on a fixture so that they are a 100% match. Even black has slight variations. There has to be a repair procedure for this paint, they just need Prefix to be involved.

They will have no problem with this, in fact, Prefix is so awesome if you were willing to pay shipping you wouldn't even have to involve your dealer. Those guys are awesome over there.

When I had my clear bra installed, my installer suggested I sand the edges around the intake scoop from the inside as the paint had curled edges from the tape lines. He said a wash mitt could catch that edge and flake paint off. I'm assuming the same issue is present at the hood vents.

I just noticed that that one of my vents on my TA wiggles a tad bit(the 1st vent on the drivers side), all the others are very tight, I haven't had the car long enough to look at how the vents are fastened, I just looked now, and saw that one of the clips is broken off, I would think those clips would be much bigger, time to call the dealer for a new one.

I have the same paint as you but haven't had a chip yet. Good luck with the repair and keep us posted on how it goes. I'm curious as i'm sure I will eventually run into some type of pain chip problem.

I was trying to pop mine off my 2015 today and noticed they started putting adhesive tape on the vents to hold them to the hood.

That's odd, my 2015 doesn't have tape and the vents do wiggle around a bit. I've noticed where it has worn through the paint around the tape lines. You have to look for the damage but it's there.

I did notice that the clips wouldn't have held them in, in some cases - ie, they cut the wholes a tad bit too big, I wonder if that was the case for mine.

It maybe worth owners adding some strong double sided tape themselves to prevent them from wiggling around.

My ACR has double sided tape! Also one of the vents is digging into the paint. :/

Can you take a quick pic this weekend of where the tape is? I would like to do that on mine. Hopefully it will prevent further damage.

My Medusa had one small fracture at the corner of the vent so Chrysler agreed to fix it but not repaint the entire hood. Tomball Dodge worked and worked on Chrysler to do better than that and Prefix wanted the car back to fix properly but nobody wanted to pay the $3500 round trip transport charge. Ben Keating's cousin owns a high end paint and body shop on the east side of Houston so I agreed to let him try and fix it. Being white it was a pretty simple fix and he did an outstanding job on it and then resprayed the clear coat over the entire hood.

I hope you can get yours fixed properly since it is such an unusual finish.

It really just looks as if none of the wholes are truly uniform for the vents. Since they are all hand cut out of the hood, it leads to whoever is doing the cutting to possibly trim too much, meaning a loose fit.

the joys of hand built cars I suppose

Dodge really needs to up the QA. It's the small stuff that kills them

Thanks, man. That's interesting no signs of tape whatsoever on any of my vents. I'll have to remove and install when I touch up the little spots that it's done damage to.
